DESCRIPTION:  \nBillings\, MT—May 31\, 2023—Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming (GSMW) will be bringing science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics programming to Townsend\, MT on Friday\, June 9 from 3:00pm – 4:30pm with their Mobile STEM Learning Center. Programming will take place at the Townsend Library located at 201 N. Spruce Street. All programming is free and open to girls in grades K-12. \nThe Mobile STEM Learning Center is a new resource to GSMW that will provide valuable programming to girls across 78 communities across Montana and Wyoming. The cargo-style van is equipped with solar to power the myriad of technology available to youth\, including 3D printers\, microscopes\, virtual reality headsets\, drones\, and more. \nThe Mobile STEM Learning Center will show possibilities\, provide knowledge\, and give hands-on STEM experience to girls at an early age. While more than half of the U.S. workforce is female\, less than one quarter of STEM careers are held by women. From their initial interest in STEM as a child to majoring in a STEM subject in college to pursuing a STEM career as an adult\, the gender disparity needs to change at every stage of girls’ and women’s STEM engagement. \nApproximately 67% of the population in Montana and Wyoming is rural. This translates to hurdles that can include a lack of access to honors courses\, high-level technology business exposure\, as well as limited access to quality curriculum and vigorous and engaging math and science courses. \nThe Mobile STEM Learning Center will allow GSMW to create and optimize an environment where girls explore freely\, expand their perspectives\, and hopefully pique their interest and confidence to explore STEM even more. DESCRIPTION:  \n\nHelena Handbasket is a local (Helena and Townsend) area band playing an “Americana” style of music. The band includes 4-5 musicians depending on the event.   Jim and Terry Gunderson are local musicians and artisans that own and operate the Goose Bay Glass shop in Townsend and are 2 of the musicians in Helena Handbasket. \nHelena Handbasket is an oldtime stringband from the Helena\, Montana-area who met twenty years ago as members of the Helena Parlour Pickers. The members include fiddler Terry Williams\, Jim Gundersen on concertina and banjo\, David Payne on guitar and Candace Payne on upright bass. The gang’s first gig occurred in 2005 when they played for the Missouri River fishing lodge\, and they’ve been playing for dances and parties ever since. Their repertoire spans the range of old-time Americana to Celtic traditional–and be prepared for some sweet harmony during an occasional western swing song. \n

DESCRIPTION:Judy Williams is a native Montanan born and raised in White Sulphur Springs.  She was the middle child of a musical family. Judy plays bass guitar and sang with popular country bands for several years in the Spokane\, Washington and Coeur d’Alene\, Idaho area prior to moving back home to Montana in 1986. She continues to provide entertainment with dance music and laugh-filled variety shows. Her motto is: “If it isn’t fun\, I’m probably not doing it”. \nIn 1987 Judy married Broadwater County rancher Tom Williams and is actively involved in the ranch located near Radersburg. They raise beef cattle and hay on a portion of the ranch established by Tom’s grandfather who arrived in Montana in 1889. \nJudy performs professionally all over Montana and western Canada as “The Divine Bovines”. Judy observers the cattle on her ranch and then her keen sense of humor and her musical ability kick in as she writes hilarious parodies “from the cows’ point of view”. \nTo learn more about the Divine Bovines visit their website at www.divinebovines.com. \nIn addition to performing as the “Divine Bovines” Judy is the founder of “Dixie and the Cup Sisters” and has written/directed the Townsend Rotary Club Variety Show many times. The show was originally billed as a “Talent Show” but we found there was a lot of variety and not much talent. But Judy has managed to create entertaining and successful shows working with the variety she was given! \nI have heard Judy and her partner Carla Ahern perform as “Divine Bovines” (they were outstanding) and I have worked with Judy on the Townsend Rotary Variety Show (what a pleasure it was to work with Judy). She is terrific at everything she does — but\, by far\, my favorite performance is her “Dancing with my Daddy” an original song written by Judy. That song always makes feel like a small child and really makes me remember and miss my own father. \nMontana PBS honored Judy by choosing her to be featured in a segment of their popular Back Roads of Montana program in May of 2014. Repeated airings of that segment still continue to generate future bookings. \n \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Slice of Summer is a community-sponsored family fun event held on the third Thursday of July\, and August  at Heritage Fun Park.  Mark your calendars-this year’s Slice of Summer dates are July 20 and August 17. \nSlice of Summer includes Youth Activities that run from 1:00-5:00 pm and Family Activities that run from 5:00-8:00 pm. Youth activities include free use of the swimming pool.  Family activities include free musical entertainment and reasonably priced food and drink. \nTownsend Rotary Club\, Lions Club and other organizations will be providing affordable food starting mid-afternoon will be provided again for families through 8 pm.  Music begins at 5 pm and goes to 8 pm. \nSlice of Summer started after Broadwater County High School students mentioned in interviews for Rotary scholarships that Townsend needed some fun event for families like the Alive at Five event in Helena.
