An expansive valley between the Big Belt and Elkhorn Mountains, where the Missouri River opens into Canyon Ferry Reservoir, is Broadwater County Montana. County seat Townsend, Toston, Winston, and Radersburg boast historic buildings like the Canton Church and Canyon Ferry Mansion. There are numerous ghost towns and historic sights including ancient tipi rings, buffalo jumps, ancient petroglyphs, and Lewis and Clark sights like York Island, the Little Gates of the Mountains, and the Crimson Bluffs.
Sporting activities include hunting, fishing, and bird watching. Hunters can find Elk, Mule Deer, White Tail Deer, Antelope, Grouse, Pheasant, Big Horn Sheep and Mountain Goats. Anglers and Fly Fishing enthusiasts can catch a variety of Trout, Walleye, and Carp. Recreation opportunities include hiking, rock-climbing, kayaking, horseback, and mountain biking trails, and public designated ATV areas. Ice Boating is also popular, as well as cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Campgrounds include federal, state, private and KOA. Community events include: Walleye Festival, County Fair and NRA Rodeo, Fall Fest, Health Fair, Airport Fly-In, Car Show, Quilt Show, Cowboy Entertainer Gathering, and Christmas Stroll.
